Unlike many other entry-level cameras from across the board, the RP actually features both a headphone jack and mic jack. This technology was only available in Live View mode in the EOS 6D Mark II but it works with both the EVF and monitor in mirrorless cameras. Image formats: Stills: JPEG (DCF 2.0, Exif  2.31), CR3.RAW, C-RAW, RAW+JPEG; Movies: MPEG4 AVC/H.264 variable (average) bit rate, Audio: Linear PCM, AAC Interface terminals: USB 2.0, HDMI (type C), External Microphone In/Line In (Stereo mini jack), Headphone socket (Stereo mini jack), E3-type terminal (remote control terminal) Auto white balance white priority mode with warm-toned LED lighting. We found the screens in the camera didn’t display the actual recording frame correctly, which led to some undesirable cropping. We thought swapping to RAW+JPEG mode would reduce the buffer capacity  but the camera continued to record undeterred until we stopped recording at 108 frames without changing the frame rate. Unfortunately, there’s no joystick so to use it you must enable Touch & Drag AF in the camera’s menu (page 7 of the shooting menu). So while the RP is small and light, shooting without a gimbal will result in shaky, jittery footage. The EOS RP removes the top LCD and goofy touch-bar of the EOS R to add the dedicated mode dial, which I prefer. ISO range: Auto – ISO 100-40000: with expansion to L (50) and H1 51200, H2  102400; adjustable in 1/3 or 1 EV steps Log profiles are not available and 4K recording is strictly at consumer level. The monitor is the same as in the EOS 6D II and is fully articulated with 1,040,000 dots, 100% frame coverage and a viewing angle of approximately 170 degrees, vertically and horizontally. Changing the shutter angle will create different cinematic effects. An attenuator is provided for muffling loud noises that might otherwise be distorted. As you might expect, it lacks various things in comparison to the more advanced R model. Close-up, ISO 100, 1/125 second exposure at f/1.8. 4779 versus 5655 autofocus p… The default auto setting was able to deliver neutral colour rendition under white fluorescent lighting but failed to completely eliminate the warm casts produced by incandescent and warm-toned LED lighting. The top panel of the EOS RP with no lens fitted. Self-timer: 2 or 10 seconds delay It shoots 4K UHD videos up to 24 fps and 1080p FHD video up to 60 fps for slow-motion capture. Based on CR3.RAW files converted into 16-bit TIFF format with Adobe Camera Raw: All shots taken with the RF 35mm f/1.8 MACRO IS STM lens. It’s a smaller battery than the one in the EOS R, which accounts for its relatively low shooting capacity (250 shots/charge with the monitor or 210 with the EVF). Soundtracks are recorded in stereo using twin microphones in the camera and the menu provides settings for selecting between auto and manual level adjustments. Still frame from HD 720 video clip taken at 50p. When looking at the Canon EOS RP, though it is a camera capable of video capture, its overall video features, or lack thereof, do not make it a compelling option if you're primary focus is video. 132.5 x 85.0 x 70.0 mm The EOS RP  has a chassis made from magnesium alloy with some parts of aluminium and a cladding fabricated from polycarbonate resin impregnated with glass fibre. The EVF of the EOS RP is again smaller than the EOS R, being around 0.39-inches in size, but it does feature the same impressive 60fps frame rate … The Menu button sits alone above the monitor to the left of the EVF housing. For photographers making their first investment in a mirrorless system, the EOS RP is a good choice. The Bluetooth interface can also be used to pick up GPS data from a connected phone and embed it automatically in the metadata of images as they are recorded. For a novice, frame rates are generally either ignored or not understood at all, so it's possible that the target market for this camera would not care about any of this. No extraneous camera noises were found in the soundtracks of video clips we recorded and, although not impressive in quality, the audio was good enough for non-professional use. The EOS RP allows focusing at f11, has a new focus bracketing feature (although you’ll need to do the stacking externally), a new spot-focusing mode, and now also supports eye-detection with continuous Servo AF, a feature missing from the EOS R when it was launched. The review camera took just over one second on average to power-up ready for shooting, which is faster than the EOS R but a bit slower than the equivalent DSLR camera. The RP launched in an environment where it was the cheapest full frame camera ever, but at the same time had few native lenses that allowed it to stay that affordable. However, the camera allows you to save selected frames as 8.3-megapixel (3840 x 2160 pixels) JPEG files. Neither the screen nor the EVF accurately reflected the scene coverage so we frequently ended up with subjects’ heads cut off. Though every camera released in the last several years has the capability of capturing movies, only a select few of them do it well enough to be labeled as a "video camera." Canon’s Video Snapshots mode  (another consumer-level function) is also available, enabling users to record a few seconds of FHD video each time the movie button is pressed. Canon EOS RP design. Like most Canon cameras released in the last five or so years, the 1080p footage looks pretty drab. I am usually able to forgive it and know that I'll later scale down 4K footage for 1080p use, but with the RP your options here are minimal thanks to the frame rate exclusivity between 4K and Full HD capture. Above the on the thumb rest are the AE ON, AE/FE lock and AF-point/Index/Magnify/Reduce button. AF points & selection: 4779 AF positions available; Automatic selection: Face+tracking + Eye AF,  Manual selection: 1-point AF with adjustable frame size, AF point Expansion (up, down, left, right or surrounding), Zone AF (all AF points divided into 9 focusing zones) The camera will combine these into an album covering the elapsed shooting period. 30 Mbps // 225MB/min, 29.97p/25.00p / IPB Lite: Approx. Dimensions (wxhxd): Approx. Because it's a mirrorless camera, there is focus peaking as well. A strong full-frame upgrade for those with older Canon DSLRs or a collections of EF lenses, but the EOS RP's older sensor and 4K video limitations mean those starting from … While things like megapixels and frame rates may look different here on a table, I don't feel or see any difference in actual shooting. What is the EOS-RP? There’s also a HDMI type C port, a stereo mini jack for external microphones and another for a headphones  plug. The EOS RP has an identical sensor to the 6D Mark II, with a micro-lens array design more suited to mirrorless lenses. The white priority auto setting delivered much better corrections, coming close to eliminating the warm cast of the LED lighting and suppressing much of the tungsten lighting warm cast. It had no discernible effect on the white fluorescent lighting. For starters, it lacks an LCD data panel, its place being taken by the mode dial, which has the standard settings you’d expect from an entry-level camera, including separate settings for the two automated (‘Basic Zone’) modes, a movie mode and three programmable ‘Custom’ memory positions. Similar to many other DSLR cameras, the continuous recording time for the EOS RP is limited to 29 minutes and 59 seconds for all video resolutions. Other bracketing options: WB – +/-3 levels in Blue/Amber or Magenta/Green, focus bracketing The Canon EOS RP features a built-in interval timer mode, which allows you to get creative and produce your own time-lapse movies in camera. Auto white balance ambience priority mode with warm-toned LED lighting. Fortunately, the buffer capacity in the RP is larger than the 6D II’s. But from the perspective of an informed user, what Canon has chosen to do here is baffling. Each has a lift-up rubber-like cover. Video Quality. googletag.defineSlot('/1004247/reviews-buy-pos-3', [300, 100], 'div-gpt-ad-1539240888326-0').addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1539241118937-0'); }); Ads can be a pain, but they are our only way to maintain the server. And the small body size means a smaller battery – so the 250 shot battery life is way less than larger DSLRs. There is no "rule" that says you must use specific shutter speeds at specific video frame rates. Buffer capacity: To card capacity for JPEGs, up to 50 RAW files It took 9.3 seconds to clear the buffer memory. The EOS RP is classified as an entry-level model in Canon’s full-frame mirrorless range. Finally, an E3-type terminal is provided for connecting a wired remote control. Fitting the sensor that was already being used in the EOS 6D II into a compact magnesium alloy body and utilising a traditional user interface with fewer buttons, lower-resolution EVF and monitor screens and only one card slot has enabled Canon to price the EOS RP below not only its main competitors but also the EOS 6D II. Added to that, the 25 fps frame rate was too slow for the AF system to keep up with subjects’ motion. And it records footage using the MPEG-4 codec to the highly compatible MP4 format. (Source: Canon.). They will also welcome the ability to frame scenes via the EVF, rather than having to use the monitor in a DSLR camera. The 4K video capabilities are  restricted to 24/25p but photographers who like to shoot the occasional movie clip should be happy with that. Material on this site may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted or otherwise used without the prior written consent of The Imaging Resource. If you care about the quality of your footage, shooting in 4K is the only way to go on the RP. By far, the best thing about this camera is its price. A/D processing: 14-bit Where am I going with this? Canon EOS RP Price. Shutter (speed range): Electronically-controlled focal-plane shutter rated for 100,000 cycles  (30-1/4000 second plus Bulb); flash synch at 1/180 second So while the Canon RP is a good entry level stills camera, given its price point, it's not a particularly good video camera. Still frame from Full HD 1080 video clip taken at 50p. If video is important to you, we’d recommend waiting for a future model with improved 4K capabilities. Source: Canon.). Dual Pixel AF makes it easy to shoot 1080p footage, but the footage isn't especially detailed. Depending on which adapter you choose, that would add between $200 and $800 to the overall price if purchased separately. 1,040,000 dots, 100% frame coverage, approx. Built-in Wi-Fi and low-energy Bluetooth interfaces make it easy to connect the EOS RP to a smartphone (or similar device) in order to transfer files or operate camera controls remotely. The RP comes packaged with a time-lapse movie feature, excellent touch-and-drag autofocus capability, the nearly-always awesome Dual Pixel CMOS AF* that features Eye-AF and Face-detection. There is no Log profile available in the RP, though this shouldn't come as much of a surprise as Canon seems reticent to offer C-Log as a standard feature. Dual Pixel CMOS AF detectors cover 88% of the horizontal frame and 100% of it vertically, supporting up to 4779 focus positions. 1,10,495, which is not too bad for a full-frame camera in a compact body. Sadly, the EOS RP is significantly worse here, with a battery life of just 250 frames, although Canon hasn't stated whether this is when using the LCD or the EVF. In terms of the video specifications, the Canon EOS RP can only record internally or externally at 4:2:0 8-bit, rather than externally at 4:2:2 10-bit with C-Log as on the EOS R. There are a choice of 25p or 24p frame rates for 4K and up to 60p for Full HD, but … A metal-lined tripod mount is located on the base plate in line with the optical axis of any lens that is fitted. Most cameras bundled with adaptors will provide the basic EF-EOS R adapter, which will be good enough for the overwhelming majority of potential buyers. For our timing tests we used a 64GB Panasonic SDXC  UHS-I card, which is rated for 90-95MB/second. An inset LED that doubles as a self-timer/remote control lamp and AF assist beam lies between the grip moulding and the lens mount. Focus modes: One-shot, Servo AF Flash: External flashguns only There is no in-body image stabilization, and the I.S offered in Canon RF lenses right now is limited and doesn't seem to help reduce vibration much even in lenses where it is present. These all sound great! 60 Mbps // 440MB/min, 29.97p/25.00p / IPB: Approx. Unlike its bigger brother, the EOS R, the Canon EOS RP only offers 4K video at 24p (23.98 fps) and 25p (PAL mode). ISO 51200 (H1), 2 second exposure at f/18. Wide dynamic range subject; ISO 100, 1/8 second exposure at f/8. In the high-speed continuous shooting mode, the camera was able to record 50 Large/Fine JPEGs in ten seconds, which equates to five frames/second, slightly faster than the specified frame rate. ... and video frame rate is capped at 25fps. googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest(); But where the 6D II used the DIGIC 7 processor, the  EOS RP comes with the latest DIGIC 8 chip, which should (in theory) provide some improvements to performance. Resolution and frame-rate options for the Canon EOS RP Perks and quirks. If you find the camera's continuous shooting spec to be insufficient for a specific task, switch to 4K video mode and capture 24 frames per second to catch the micro-moments you've been missing. Users can reduce the refresh rate by selecting the power-saving mode but it results in quite choppy viewing and is not generally recommended. Please Login or Register to access the Conclusion. The EOS RP has a relatively modest video specification: it will shoot 4K video but only from a heavily cropped region and with significant rolling shutter. Power supply: LP-E17 rechargeable Li-ion batteries in special base pack; CIPA rated for approx.250 shots/charge As with the EOS R, these times varied, depending on which type of shutter (mechanical or electronic) was engaged and whether the monitor or the EVF was used for shot composition. Viewfinder: 0.39-inch OLED colour EVF with 2,360,000 dots, approx. Engaging the Movie digital IS function further crops the frame. Conclusion Wind noise suppression is available through an automatic filter, which only works with the built-in mics. }); Rethink Detail Capture sharper details than ever before with the EOS RP's 26 megapixel Full Frame CMOS sensor and up to 4779 selectable AF point positions. Auto white balance white priority mode with incandescent lighting. Fitting an EF-S lens via an adapter will cause the camera to default to HD recording. When shooting stills we found the autofocusing system to be fast and generally accurate, including in very low lighting after dark. Canon will release a series of firmware updates to add a 23.98fps frame rate for video recording to the EOS RP, EOS 90D and PowerShot G7X Mark III. Lack of high frame rate video … Whether it’s enthusiasts looking to get their first full-frame or mirrorless camera, or seasoned professionals who need a backup body, the Canon EOS RP is a solid choice. The problem is made worse by comparing the quality of footage captured on the RP. Log recording options are not available with this camera, although most users may not miss them. Weight: Approx. If you prefer the look of 30p, you can't have that with the upgraded visual quality of the RP's 4K. Having no flash, we could only test the review camera with tungsten, fluorescent and warm-toned LED lights. Even in dim, low-contrast situations we found no evidence of ‘hunting’ for focus. Colour accuracy was generally good for both JPEGs and raw files. A locking lever for the M-Fn switch is located beside the Quick Control dial. 440 grams (body only); 485 grams with battery and card. We wouldn't recommend the EOS RP if you have any real interest in shooting video. Colour space options: sRGB and Adobe RGB There is a large crop factor between 4K and 1080p footage, and as annoying as this is, it's par for the course when it comes to Canon cameras. The grip moulding is generous and comfortable to hold and should be adequate for larger lenses (although an extension is available). googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1539240888326-0'); }); Lens mount: RF (EF and EF-S lenses can be attached via mount adapter) However they were so small (less than 0.05 seconds) as to be considered negligible. As you can see, there are really only a few areas where the EOS RP beats the EOS R: size, weight, and price. It has a touch-screen overlay that supports touch AF. Focusing aids: AF Assist Beam (LED), focus peaking Most RF-mount lenses currently available are high-end L-series lenses, and those will be very much beyond the price point of those interested in this entry-level camera. Download and install firmware version 1.4.0 for your EOS RP Capture Full HD movies in the frame rate of 23.98p and support for the RF 85mm F1.2L USM DS lens has been added Explore (Source: Canon.). Long exposures at night contained plenty of detail and natural-looking colour reproduction, was retained through to the highest ISO setting. It has an easier-to-use control layout in a smaller and lighter body and Canon is steadily adding to the three lenses it launched with the EOS R last year. Mirrorless Cameras Mirrorless Cameras Mirrorless Cameras. The native ISO range in the RP is the same as the 6D II’s, extending from ISO 100 to ISO 40000, with extensions to ISO 50  and ISO 102400 available. There's even clean 4K 4:2:2 8-bit HDMI out, which is rather nice. As an additional advantage for wildlife photographers wanting more telephoto reach, note that when capturing 4K video there is an additional crop factor of 1.38X with the EOS-1D X Mark II, and 1.74X with the EOS 5D Mark IV, since the 4096 x 2160 pixels of the 4K format are directly pulled from that cropped central area of the full-frame sensor, rather than from the entire full-frame area. Custom Functions: 23 Up to 50 CR3.RAW files can be recorded and stored in the buffer, more than twice the capacity offered by the 6D II. The EOS RP doesn't take bad-looking video for the most part, but the problems with the camera are rooted in the perplexing choices Canon made in the implementation of its abilities. When you see how rich the colors look and how much sharper details are in 4K compared to 1080p, it's hard not to wonder why that happens. googletag.cmd.push(function() { The EOS RP feels much more like a traditional EOS camera than the EOS R thanks to a streamlining of the controls. The Canon EOS RP is the lightest and smallest full-frame camera in Canon’s camera lineup. But, as in the EOS R, we found this function be quite slow and unwieldy and easy to activate unintentionally. Image sensor: 35.9 x 24 mm CMOS sensor with 27.1 million photosites (26.2 megapixels effective), built-in low-pass filter Strong backlighting; ISO 100, 1/200 second exposure at f/11. Unlike the EOS R, the RP supports USB charging, which can reduce capacity anxiety for photographers in the field if they carry a portable charger. The official comparison video of Canon EOS R and Canon EOS RP now available online. Image Stabilisation: Lens based It doesn't help that Canon has yet to figure out how to make their Full HD footage look as crisp and rich as their 4K footage, and in 2019, it's becoming expected that cameras worth their salt also offer enhanced high-frame rate capture in Full HD at the very least, and 4Kp60 if they want to really get attention. In the end, none of the clips we shot in 4K mode was really usable. No depth of field preview button  is provided, an unfortunate omission since one of the advantages of mirrorless cameras is their ability to display an accurate preview at any aperture setting. 23.98, 25 fps / IPB: 120Mbps // 869 MB/min, 59.94p/50.00p / IPB: Approx. I can't personally explain it, but I do know that it bothers me. So in this video, I talk about the EOS-RP, my thoughts, and the fact that I really do think this camera can be a good entry level camera for those wanting to jump into full frame. If you don't really care about the loss in quality to 1080p, but like the look of 24p motion, you're also out of luck as you will be forced to capture 4K. Canon has today announced a firmware upgrade that will finally imbue two of its most recent cameras, the Canon EOS RP and Canon EOS 90D, with the ability to shoot video at 24 frames per second. It could be wise to invest in a spare battery despite its relatively high price (AU$74.95 in Canon’s online store). Focus system: Dual Pixel CMOS AF phase-difference detection system with image sensor, coverage 88% horizontal and 100% vertical Picture Styles: Auto, Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Fine Detail, Neutral, Faithful, Monochrome, User Defined (x3) Canon EOS RP 1080p30 Sample Video #1 … Three compartments on the left hand side panel protect the interface ports for the wired remote controller, HDMI out, external microphone, USB C connection and headphone jack. Images must be stacked with Digital Photo Professional software. The body of the camera merely costs $1,299 on the purchase. The EOS RP can only capture 4K video at 23.98p (or 25p for PAL) and only offers Full HD capture at 29.97p and 59.94p. For raw file capture, the camera recorded 77 shots in 15 seconds before we stopped recording, indicating raw files are handled in the same way as JPEGs. The EVF, which protrudes above the monitor, also has lower resolution than the one in the EOS R (2.36-million vs 3.69 million dots and its default refresh rate is 60 fps. The review camera was supplied with the RF 35mm f/1.8L Macro IS STM lens, which is reviewed separately. The camera also comes with the normal USB port which, despite being USB 2.0 only, supports USB charging. The rear panel is also sparsely populated, compared with the EOS R. Gone is the controversial touch bar which, we suspect, won’t be missed. While not the lightest in its class – the Sony α7 body is 24 grams lighter – it’s lighter than the EOS R and the lightest of the latest full-frame mirrorless cameras. The body of the EOS RP instantly gives you a DSLR feel. Imaging Resource © 1998 - 2020. Shot-to-shot times averaged 0.4 seconds, which is a tad more than we found when testing the EOS R.  It took an average of 0.3 seconds to process a single JPEG file and 0.32 seconds for a raw file and 0.34 seconds for a RAW+JPEG pair. As with the 5D Mark IV, EOS-1D X Mark II and EOS R, the EOS RP features 4K Frame Grab where an 8.3 MP image can be saved from an individual frame of 4K recorded video. Six new lenses are scheduled for release in 2019: a 15-35mm f/2.8L, 24-70mm f/2.8L, 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS, 85mm f/1.2L, 85mm f/1.2L DS and  70-200mm f/2.8L, although only one of them (the 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS) is ideal for the smaller, lighter body. All movies are recorded in the MP4 format with H.264 compression and a variable bit rate. Like the EOS R, the EOS RP provides Kelvin temperature settings along with plenty of in-camera adjustments for tweaking colours on-the-fly, which are straightforward to use. Our Imatest tests showed the review camera to be an above-average performer, although we had to wait until the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw, our preferred raw file converter became available to confirm this. Raw files were very close to ideal colour values. There is no 4Kp30 or higher … googletag.defineSlot('/1004247/reviews-buy-pos-4', [300, 100], 'div-gpt-ad-1539241118937-0').addService(googletag.pubads()); Big on quality, small on size. The other differences in the RP’s favor are small, such as the unlimited buffer (largely a factor of the lukewarm 5 FPS max frame rate) and a slightly better 4K video crop factor of 1.6× rather than 1.74×. In addition, the autofocusing system struggled to track moving subjects and the 25 fps frame rate was too slow to record anything faster than slow movements. Both time-lapse and HDR (high dynamic range) recording modes are available in movie mode and 4K movies can be output via HDMI. The camera fared better with Full HD and HD recording, which are both available at 50p (PAL format) but the maximum recording time is just under 30 minutes, which is standard for an entry-level camera. I understand if the RP's processor isn't capable of managing the extra 6 frames per second in 4K to offer 30p, but that doesn't excuse not offering 24p from being available in the 1080p option. The EOS RP feels much more like a traditional EOS camera than the EOS R thanks to a streamlining of the controls. Though you can't customize each of the view options, one of them includes a histogram and another is fully clean of any visual/text-overlay distractions (the latter being something that not even offered on the Nikon Z6, an arguably video-focused camera). So while a camera like the Sony A7 III is less of a "video camera" than, say, the Nikon Z6, they're both usable as such. Noise was obvious in shots taken at the two highest ISO settings. 26 Mbps // 196MB/min.
